Common Questions

Q: What age does my son need to be to participate in PAPA Lax?

A: Any interested young man between the ages of 6-14 is welcome to enroll in PAPA Lax.

Q: What nights per week will PAPA lax play?

A: Each age group will play for 5 successive evenings. While we reserve the right to alter the evenings depending upon enrollment per age group, our tentative schedule for the summer of 2009 is as follows:

6-7 Yr Olds will play Mon-Fri June 15 -19 from 6-8 pm
8-9 Yr Olds will play Mon-Fri June 22-16 from 6-8 pm
10-12 Yr Olds will play Mon-Fri July 6-10 from 6-8 pm
13-14 Yr Olds will play Mon-Fri July 13-17 from 6-8 pm

Q: What hour(s) does PAPA Lax play?

A: Sessions will run from 6-8 pm. We ask parents to try to arrive at the field by 5:45 as it takes a minimum of 15 minutes to get the boys properly outfitted and equipped.

Q: How long does the PAPA Lax program run?

A: While the schedule is different each year, PAPA Lax typically begins in mid June and continues through middle or late July.

Q: Can my son miss a game or practice?

A: Yes. While we obviously don't encourage absences, we understand that the summer is first and foremost about families and the vacations they often take. We understand that it will not be uncommon for our players to miss a session here an there due to travel and other activities. We only ask that that the players and their parents notify the coach at least one week previous to his absence so that the coach can plan accordingly.

Q: What, if any equipment does my son need to arrive at PAPA Lacrosse with?

A: We ask that each PAPA Lacrosse player arrive in shorts, wearing cleats or sneakers, an athletic cup and have a rubber mouth guard in his possession.

Q: Where does my son pick up his lacrosse equipment?

A: Equipment will be kept on site at the PAPA Lacrosse field and will be distributed and collected before each session or game.

Q: What is 'Sticks 4 Kids?'

A: Beginning in the summer of 2008, we hope to raise the necessary funds to provide every young man who participates in PAPA Lacrosse will receive his own lacrosse stick which he can then make use of throughout the summer and beyond! We call it our, 'Sticks 4 Kids' program!

Q: Where is the PAPA Lax Field?

A: It is located on the corner of Lincoln and Morris Streets in Phoenixville and is approximately 1 block behind Mimmo's Pizza.

Q: What about rain outs?

A: Summer weather is an adventure. Almost any afternoon can be difficult to predict. We will attempt to make a decision about cancellations 30 minutes before each session and will notify everyone through this web page and/or email if we elect to cancel a particular session. Typically a light rain will not cause cancellation but heavy rain and any thunder or lightning will result in an automatic cancellation. Because it is summer and families have things to do and places to go, not all cancellations will be rescheduled. We apologize ahead of time should this occur. However, beginning in 09 we will set aside one extra week with the hope of making up at least some sessions that were rained out.

Q: How will I be notified about anything related to PAPA Lacrosse?

A: All correspondence with the parents of PAPA Lacrosse players will be done through email. If you do not have email, it will be your responsibility, not the coach's responsibility, to remain up to date on any scheduling changes. We recommend that parents without email service regularly call another PAPA Lacrosse parent who does have email service, in order to stay up to date on the latest PAPA Lacrosse news/events.

Q: I worry about the physical contact in boys lacrosse. Can you set my mind at ease?!

A: Unlike football in which contact is fundamental to the sport, contact in boys lacrosse is more incidental in nature. While boys have been injured playing lacrosse, take comfort in knowing that the equipment is increasingly protective and that, because contact between players can only occur above the waist, the knees and ankles (a common location for many athletic injuries) are less likely to be injured. Please know that we will do all we can to safeguard each of our players.

Q: Should my son love PAPA Lacrosse and wish to continue to play in the future, where might be go?

A: We recommend to those young men who enjoy lacrosse and want to develop their skills throughout the year, to enroll in the fall PMYC Lacrosse program and then the spring PMYC Lacrosse program. The fall program is more competitive than PAPA Lacrosse, but less competitive than the spring program. Thus a good progression might begin with PAPA Lacrosse then move to PMYC Fall Lacrosse followed by PMYC Spring Lacrosse. As with PAPA Lacrosse, equipment will be provided for all PMYC Lacrosse programs.

Q: I have additional questions. Who might I contact for further assistance or to apply for a PAPA Lax scholarship?

A: You may contact Greg Porter at greg.porter@danielfoundation.net or via phone at 484-744-2040.
